Bored.
So with the lack of any other responsibilities, I sacked it all off and
jetted off with fishing rods, camera and beer tokens in hand. Eleven
countries and fourteen months later I was back in the same chair, skint,
and wishing I could do it all over again.
And who knows, maybe I will.
The
links at the right are my haphazard diary of the trip down the long road
to nowhere, from Bangkok to Belize, from good to great, and from bad to
even worse.
But
I'd still get on the plane again tomorrow.

Thailand.
Fishing at Bung San Lam puddle, Bangkok, life afloat on Sri Nikharin Reservoir after
Snakeheads and anything that survives the nets. Fun down on the Andaman
Islands of Koh Phi Phi & Koh Lanta, and a trip fishing up the River Kwai
valley via Kanchanaburi, Soi Yat Yai and finally Khao Laem
up near Myanmar... and all the way back again.

Onto
Laos for a couple of weeks' sabbatical. Attempting to catch
something (fish!) from the Mekong at beautiful Don Det in the 4000 Islands
interspersed with a nasty brush with Asian Arse.

Malaysia,
the heat and stench of Kuala Lumpur, a trip to fish Tasik Temengorr in
the far north. Onto
the paradise islands of Pulau Perhentian Kecil for some beach life. Wearing
down some Snakeheads at Tasik Kenyir. Then some Sailfish at Kuala Rompin
and then finally getting lost in the jungle rivers south of Taman Negara at Sungai
Lembing on the trail of the enigma which is the Malaysian Red Mahseer- the Kelah. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Sydney
in winter... So up
to Darwin on the trail of Spanish Mackerel & Barramundi, walkabout across
the outback- Barra fishing in a knackered station-wagon through Kakadu. A
disastrous visit to the shanty town of Borroloola and ending up in the
cultural centre that is Mount Isa. Up to the remote retirement resort of
Karumba. Looking for huge Barra (and not finding them) at Lake Tinaroo.
Then a ten day live-aboard trip Black Marlin fishing
off Cairns in the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef. All tipped off with a road-trip all the way down the
east coast and back to Sydney again.

Land of rain and wind.
Encountering drunkenness, Snapper fishing, Hapuka, pneumonia and psychopathic trailer-trash in the North Island. Then another giant
road trip on the trail of Eels,
mountains, rivers, whales, trout and Eagle Rays down in the south.
Then realising it's just like Britain really, except 10000 miles away.

The
Pacific paradise that is the Fiji Islands. Nutters in Nadi, shite in
Sigatoka, and wondering what Kava is all about. Falling out with the locals,
island hopping up
in the Yasawas & the Mamanucas, and ultimately failing to catch a
big Giant Trevally, although the little fellas and the Mangrove Jacks
did come out to play.

A
stopover in Los Angeles for a few days, briefly loitering with the nutters of
Santa Monica and Venice Beach before slipping south to San Diego. |
Into
Mexico at Tijuana then through Baja California via Ensenada and the
dusty toilet that is Guerrero Negro, on the way down to La Paz and the
51st State of Cabo San Lucas. Shifting onto Oaxaca via Mexico City and finding the beautiful hippy-dippy south coast at Ziploite
& Mazunte. The odd tangle with Tuna, Yellowtail Kingfish, Mahi Mahi &
local knobheads. Finally up to Yucatan at beautiful Tulum- all the while struggling to find a days fishing for under a million
bucks.

The
photogenic rubbish tip that is Guatemala next. Volcanoes, Maya
temples, Lago De Atitlan, plastic bags and small fish as usual instead of Sailfish &
Roosterfish down on the Pacific Coast at Iztapa & Puerto De San
Jose, &
failing to catch big Snook on the Rio Dulce at
Livingstone.

Lovely
Belize to finish on. Some more Snapper and a taffle with Stingrays
fishing at Dangriga & Hopkins,
then a trip down the coast to paradise Placencia and the usual
Barracuda & Jacks- with a
trip to hospital thrown in for good measure. And all in the loveliest setting.
Such a pity
that by now I was skint.
